Fd: How did Art and Fly Fishing get together in your life? How were your beginnings in these two different fields?

RMB: I have been fly fishing since I was ten years old (I am now 66), my dad taught me. I went to the University of Texas on a football scholarship under Darrell Royal. I majored in Art at UT and also got another degree from the Art Center College of Design. I worked for the Dallas Morning News doing their art for 30 years or so, until I took a buyout. I am now a freelance artist and do fish portraits and dog portraits.

Fd: What kind of techniques do you apply? How is your process?

RMB: I have used scratch board, pen & ink, watercolor, pencil, etc. I normally fish the morning, our guide packs a lunch for us. I finish my meal, then do some sketches on the bank which end up as major pieces.

Fd: Is there a particular message or feeling you want to convey through your works?

RMB: I love to paint outdoors and I am going to lead a Plein air group this May. I am on one selection to be a signature artist. The SWS in Dallas is one of the largest in the country.

Fd: Any time for fly fishing? What are your favorite species and spots?

RMB: I have fished in Montana, Colorado (many, many places), Alaska, Utah, New Mexico, Tennessee, Virginia, Ontario, Arkansas, and Wyoming.
