Type of Water: Saltwater
Species: Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit
Hot water and air temperatures along with strong winds have kept the bonefish, permit and tarpon very active. If there is one fish that favors these particular weather conditions, this time of the year, is the permit.
Permit fishing can be epic in February and March whenever you get a mix of hot weather, wind and blue bird skies. A well presented crab fly or live blue crab usually seals the deal on Mr rubber lips. Bonefishing has been good and I have managed to catch some with my clients. Bonefish love to cruise and mud hard when the wind blows this time of the year.
A word of advise: If you're flyfishing, knowing how to double haul and cast into the wind will either increase or decrease your chances of success by 50% or more. I will put you in front of the fish and give you the best View more...Hot water and air temperatures along with strong winds have kept the bonefish, permit and tarpon very active. I will put you in front of the fish and give you the best possible angle but it will be up to you to make the right cast. This can never be stressed enough: practice, practice, practice. Casting ability is the main complaint we all flyfishing guides have about most clients that come to flyfish in south Florida and the keys.
The tarpon have been active around the keys and Everglades, but the wind has made it a little tough to get on them. the calmer days have been great in the keys basins looking for laid up tarpon on the fly. Some days have been better than others as far as numbers of shots and fish spotted but they've been around in general and will continue around as long as the cold fronts stay away.
My favorite time of the year is almost here. The tarpon migration is on its way and won't be long before the migratory strings are swimming in the ocean side of Biscayne Bay and the keys. I will be mostly flyfishing with clients but also floating crabs and mullet in between for the spinning clients.
Still got open dates for tarpon season (April, May and June). Contact me ASAP for reservations and availability.
Looking forward to fishing with you!
