The line just comes tight and swings through the run, just like it has on the previous 10 or so casts. This time there is a sudden stop, something gets in the way of your swing, something that wasn't there before. An explosion occurs as a healthy king salmon emerges from the depths and it's on!
Swinging flies for king/chinook salmon is one of the most challenging things to do in the fly fishing world, which makes it so rewarding when you make the connection.
Much of our time on the water with guests is spent with a 2-handed fly rod chasing salmon and trout. Our favorite fish to chase has to be king salmon.

We started out this season chasing these behemoths on Mother's Day and were welcomed (3 or 4 casts later) by a healthy hen of about 20lbs. She looked like she couldn't be more than a few hours out of the saltwater. This was probably one of the brightest and freshest fish we've caught on the swing and her shimmering image in the sun will forever be burnt into our memories.
May 15th - July 31st provides excellent opportunities to chase kings on the fly on the Kenai Peninsula. Much like steelhead, they are hard to catch and can often leave you empty-handed at the end of the day, but when you get the opportunity to bring one to hand, they make all the work worth it!
We are about to start the bulk of our spey fishing trips for kings, starting today and the run seems to be shaping up well with multiple fish spotted rolling in our favorite swinging holes.
We'll be back soon with updates over the next 2 weeks! Wish us luck!
