We are at Lake Yelcho, one of the great destinations within northern Patagonia in Chile.
This season, 2019-2020, has had some changes in both the ecosystem and the weather, very drastic pressure changes, high water levels and variable temperatures. But still, the trout are there, they continue to feed in many ways.
Yesterday, February 26th, I decided to go out to the deep coasts and rocky walls in search of the big browns that are usually in this kind of scenarios.
I will start by mentioning that there were many huge beetles (cantarias or ciervo volante, in spanish) everywhere, floating half alive waiting to reach the shore in order to dry up, and to be able to fly and continue searching for a partner to follow their cycle.

Anyway, a lot of cantaria beetles and a slight wind on the surface. In my experience, the stage was ready for a good afternoon of fishing.
At approximately 14:00 hrs in the afternoon I was on the south wall of Bahia Leones.
I am slowly going along the coast in search of activity on the surface, when, from one instant to the next, I start to see rainbow and brown trout, all of them attacking damsels and mainly beetles. It was then that I set up my gear (Orvis Hydros 5wt 9', with a Scientific anglers line Mpx #6, with 3X leader of 10', and a black Fat Albert in #4 hook.
The activity was very good, many trout patrolling the coast selecting food on their way. I concentrated on searching for browns, that was my goal.
Mainly all the fishing was done with my eyes, I felt like a local cowboy choosing the cow to lacerate, it was a matter of going slow, to be able to meet face to face with the trout.
The technique was: spotting the trout, presenting the fly about 3 meters ahead of it and waiting for the fly to be slowly approved.
It was a spectacular afternoon fishing among branches, rocks and deep waters. It seems that the hatch of cantarias beetles has made many browns leave their houses in search of this easy food.
Again, the brown trout kingdom giving surprises and good times.
Thank you, Yelcho!
