Type of Water: Freshwater
Species: Pike
My boss contacted me a couple of days beforehand: "Mare, we got a guest that wants guiding for pike, you game?" Of course I am. Water conditions were ideal for flyfishing for pike. But then the weather changed. A rain was looming over our afternoon trip and I was constantly checking the forecast. Miha Lenic, our client asured me that rain is no problem, but still, no one wants to cast long hairy flies in a hale storm. On the day of our fishing trip it rained a little through the night, but then came to an almost halt. The water level was just going slightly up and my confidence to have a contact was growing.

When we met at our Fishing lodge in Vrhnika we quickly got the gear in the boat and went a little upstream. While we were waiting for the water to calm down I gave him a few pointers as to where to search for the pike. An avid flyfisher full of ideas and projects the conversation was realy hitting of. And his flybox was just what the doctor ordered - big, shiny, bulky flies. We added just a little weight to get some depth on them and of we went.
It wasn't long and Miha got his first pike on fly. An average sized pike hit the fly from the side and then went on to do a little rodeo. Miha had enough skills to play the fish, not giving it much chance of escape. A quick foto and the pike swam to terrorize once more in the green fields of this enchanting Karst river. Miha was pumped, and swinged away for the next couple of hours. He got one more contact, but lost the pike. Too bad, but the goal for him was achieved - catching a pike on fly. And my objective of getting him to that goal was a worthwile expirience as well. Next time I think we will be chasing the elusive Danube salmon (Hucho hucho) on fly ;)
