I fished Spring Creek in Central Pa with my client Rachel on 6/19/18. An overnight rain shower raised the water level and clouded the stream quite a bit so I chose to start Rachel off using a Sculpin streamer pattern. She concentrated her efforts on the soft water edges where the fish seek refuge from the super strong current. We fished our way downstream and although we had a few nice strikes,we had nothing to show for our efforts.
I changed our set up to a "drop shot" nymphing set up with a size 14 Sulphur nymph and pink Squirmy worm. I had a lot of success with this set up in my scout fishing in the days prior to our trip so I was optimistic with it's potential for Rachel. I changed our set up to a "drop shot" nymphing set up with a size 14 Sulphur nymph and pink Squirmy worm. I had a lot of success with this set up in my scout fishing in the days prior to our trip so I was optimistic with it's potential for Rachel. I positioned Rachel in a productive seam that always produces fish and it wasn't too long before Rachel was hooked up with her first Spring Creek Wild Brown Trout of the day. Rachel continued fishing this set up for the remainder of the day and caught several more beautiful Wild Brown Trout.
The next morning Rachel and I met on the stream at the crack of dawn. The water level came down a bit and the clarity improved so I was optimistic we were going to have a great day. Rachel continued with her drop shot set up and like the previous day it wasn't long until she was hooked up with a very nice Wild Brown. The fish were definitely keyed in on the Sulphur nymph and Rachel continued to put fish in the net through the remainder of her trip.
Although the water conditions weren't ideal and the wading was tough, Rachel never lost her optimism and she played the hand she was dealt and made it happen by catching some beautiful Central Pa Wild Brown Trout! Huge respect to her and I am very honored to of spent time on the water with her.
