Hello my fellow fishermans!
Today I'd like to talk about how to handle and what kind of gear you use for big trouts or Danube Salmon. There can be fatal consequences for the caputered fish with using an improper way of catching it.
Here is a video of me catching and releasing trouts, and I'll try to get a better quality one up in a few days: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVAN_jYLpAM
First of all, any fisherman should use the largest tippet size that he or she can still use and of course have a net to catch a fish in. What you want to do is fight them hard and fast in order for the fish to not produce too much lactic acid, as that will decrease its chances of survival. A fish should be kept in the water as long it could be. Once a fish is caught and is safely inside the net, you can prepare your camera to take a proper picture and doing so you ensure that the fish wont be out of water for long. And before holding your captured fish in your hands, be sure to wet them in the water as that will help you not damage the protective slime that a fish has.
Here's a good summary from http://midcurrent.com/experts/good-trout-release-practices/
"" The longer you fight the fish, the more lactic acid builds up in its system. Once a fish reaches “acidosis,” or a point where the lactic acid buildup is non-reversible, it is only a matter of time before it dies. Many anglers release fish thinking that they will survive when, in fact, the fish will die a few hours later due to issues created during the fight and release. I hate to hear an angler say, “I landeda big trout on a three-weight and 6X tippet.” He thinks he’s showing off his angling skills, but what I hear is a story about how he probably killed a big fish. ""
As for my own preferences for fishing the big fishs of salmonidae family, I use a 9ft and #10 weight rod with a line ranging from diameter of 0,25 mm to 0,40 mm. I'm using this gear primary for Danube Salmon and for fishing the big Marble or Brown trouts and for Marmorata. I strictly use only stremer flies, as they are representing prey (smaller fishs) as food on their territory. However, big trouts or Danube Salmon will sometimes surprise us and take the smaller fish that we hooked and they exposed their presence on this part of the river.
