Conservation Project Grupo Los Espinillos

About the Project

A group of fly fishermen on the Río de los Espinillos River, in the Argentine province of Córdoba, has dedicated the last 24 years to conserving a portion of this magnificent rainbow trout fishery. Fly fishing is the way they nurture their love of nature. Thanks to their efforts, today the river hosts an abundant trout population. And their example has led to the creation of a water resource management model that could be replicated in other areas across Argentina and beyond. In their cabin, a sign reads: “Because the passion shared by a bunch of men struggling together for a dream holds an irrepressible force, and because a dose of romanticism is required to achieve a goal they may seem unreachable.” The Espinillos Group employs one seasonal ranger, who patrols the area alongside volunteer team members, in order to check fishing licenses. The members—around twenty anglers, total—cover his salary, plus expenses such as cabin upkeep. Now more than ever, the group needs your help communicating to anglers its intention to welcome others to fish the area and contribute financially.

Actions

Members of the Fly dreamers team visited the Espinillos River and its group of anglers in 2014 to form a better understanding of their situation. Soon after, we opened all Fly dreamers' communication channels and started sharing information about the plight of the Espinillos and also about the great trout fishing we found there. Events were held in Buenos Aires, Argentina's capital city, in order to fund the conservation actions of the group and enabling them to invite more anglers to experience their waters. Please contact us to learn more about the project and the different ways in which you can help them. Thank you.
